Fnaf is the abbreviation for Five Nights at Freddy’s. It is a very popular video game available on many platforms like android, iOS, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Windows. Scott Cawthon is the developer of this indie generic video game. The game’s first part was launched on 8th August 2014 and has launched 10 games (7 games in series and 3 spinoffs) till date. The 11th game was also being planned but couldn’t be released or worked on due to the ongoing global crisis.
Making of Fnaf
Sometimes, the most negative of feedbacks give you an idea for the best comebacks. Same happened with the creator, Scott Cawthon. He had created a game named ‘Chipper and Sons Lumber Co.’ which was a family game. It gained backlash and fun from gamers made fun of the main character of the game, calling him ‘a scary animatronics animal.’ Some famous game reviewers also called this game ‘terrifying’ thought it was a really gentle Christian-oriented game. This backlash actually gave him a growing idea. He planned to make something different than his usual games. The first part of Five Nights at Freddy’s was released and gained immense popularity. After that, there was no looking back. More games were designed, released and gained popularity. Spinoffs were also released relating to the game which gained immense popularity as well. Fnaf is one of the highest-rated horror video games and is well recognized by gamers around the world.

It was the first-ever intentional scary game by Scott. You play as a character who works as a nighttime security guard in a pizza place called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Every night animatronics roam free at night and kill anyone they see as they mistake humans to be metal endoskeletons. They stuff humans in an animatronics suit which lacks an endoskeleton. So, the main aim of the game is to survive till the dawn, i.e. 6 A.M from midnight. An anonymous guy is the only help to you. He calls you up and guides you through the defence mechanism against the animatronics. We later come to know that the character you play is Mike Schmidt. Mike is fired after the 7th night because of the things he did along with the progression of the story (suspense in the backbone of a horror story and should not be spoilt by disclosing).
It released for PC, Mac, android and iOS in 2014 but, made its PS, XBOX and Nintendo released quite recently in 2019.
This version was released in November of 2014 though it was expected to release on December 2014. The game is just a continuation of the first part where the terror of the animatronics is back. But, this time, they are a lot harder to be tackled as there are no doors to hide behind whatsoever. This released one month after the release of the first part, and it is needless to say it was sold out instantly and earned great revenue. It was basically released for the people who found the first part too easy.
It was also released the same way with games for android, iOS and windows releasing in 2014 and the PS, Nintendo and Xbox version released in 2019.
The trailer of this part was released on 25th January 2015 and was expected to launch in March 2015. But, here is where Scott had planned a real-life prank on his fans to draw their attention towards plagiarism through a scary prank. On 15th February 2015, he updated a link on steam saying that the 3rd sequel won’t be released as a hacker had leaked the game. When people opened the link, they found it to be a link to find a cloned game of his previous game named ‘there is no pause button!)
This 3rd sequel is set 30 years apart from the 1st and 2nd part when the character you play works in Fazbear’s Fright. This place is a horror attraction on the ground of the long-ago destroyed Freddy Fazbear’s pizza. One animatronics was found at that site which was half-burnt and destroyed spring-trap costume. This went bad after this discovery was made. Hallucinations of animatronics from the previous parts start haunting you though they can’t harm you. They cut audio and camera systems creating complications in the game. The player needs to maintain the systems or else the camera and audio malfunction would get him killed. This time, the guidance of defence is provided by the maker of this place for the first two nights. Then, mysterious audio recordings found by other workers are your only sticks in the dark. Unlike the other two parts, this part has two endings, good and bad. Your actions in the game determine where you reach.
When the 3rd sequel was still climbing the stairs of success, Scott decided to release another part. Though there was hype for the 3rd part, response to this part was out of the world. This was because it was set in the house of the protagonist. It was released on 31st October 2015.
In this part, the player is a young boy suffering from hallucinations of the nightmarish version of the animatronics from the 2nd sequel. This was a Halloween style game and was freakier than the originally freaky sequels. Unlike the other sequels where human voices and calls guided the player, this has an animatronic plush toy which speaks to the boy when he is alone. The ending is quite gruesome and chills the spine according to the players yet, shouldn’t be revealed. Give it a try yourself.
This sequel was released on 7th October 2016 and had many indirect connections with the very first part. The character of the player is called Mike A.K.A Eggs Benedict for no apparent reason yet, it’s funny. He works at Circus Baby’s Rentals and Entertainment (CBRE) which is a sister company to Fazbear Entertainment. The company rents animatronics for the birthday party of kids. This animatronics were initially brought for Circus Baby’s Pizza World which was blown off in a gas tragedy.
In this game, there is not one but two guides. First one is an AI assistant similar to the phone guy of the first part called HandUnit, and the 2nd one is an animatronic circus baby like the plush toy of part 4. Now, the decision is on you to make to whom you want to listen to. This sequel has a custom night mode which helps you to revisit the first part of the game. The game ends in a very unusual manner.
This game came later after a heart attack was given to the lovers of this series. Scott hinted the development of a new game on 13th June 2017 but, on 2nd July of the same year, he made a public announcement cancelling the release of the game saying that he was neglecting his life in this constant run for meeting expectations. He also added that he wasn’t abandoning the series.
On 4th December, he was back with a bang but, with a slightly different gameplay experience. Completely fear oriented games were doing great in the market, yet he wanted variations. In this game, the player had to manage a pizzeria, but, there were constant threats to him caused by animatronics every night. The decisions made in the day also affected the nights. For example, accepting a wrong sponsor without listening to the terms and conditions may lead to loud advertisements playing at night which makes it very difficult to find approaching animatronics. This also has bonuses for salvaging broken or deactivated animatronics to haunt the player at night.
Scott made an announcement on 18th August 2018 that the next sequel of the series is going to be a virtual reality game. What is scarier than playing a scary game? Feeling like you are inside the game, obviously, the game was released on 28th May 2019 where the player is shown to be a technician who is in a pizzeria (similar to that of the pizzeria simulator) fixing the malfunctioning or broken animatronics. Every dark place or night inside the pizzeria is haunted by malfunctioning animatronics who try to kill you, and you are experiencing it first-hand due to virtual reality.
Though the gameplay of this sequel isn’t available, the trailers work fine to understand the mechanics of the game. It has ‘Glamrock Freddy’ and an alligator-like animatronics character. The surroundings are set to be a modernized shopping mall with a cinema hall, laser tag arena, arcade and Freddy Fazbear’s pizza. It features characters from the previous series in the 80s fashion, and that’s interesting to see.
SPIN-OFFS- Three spinoffs were released named FNaF World (2016), Ultimate Custom Night (2018) and One Night at Freddy’s Special delivery (2019). Though these were released in association with Fnaf series, they aren’t a part of the series. Their storyline doesn’t match with any of the sequels, and they are completely different games in themselves hence, aren’t games of the series.
If you are looking forward to treating yourself with some scary games, this is the treat you deserve. Give them a try. The game is very interesting and demands utmost concentration and dedication towards its completion.
